Stakeholders in the Health sector have called for collaborative efforts to address health risks associated with high consumption of salt.
They made the call at a media round table to canvass for the need to reduce salt content in commercially produced foods in Nigeria.
The Project Adviser Network for Health Equity and Development, Dr. Jerome Mafemi while explaining the negative impact of high consumption of salt on the health of individuals said there was a need to regulate the contents of salt in packed foods to avert ailments associated with it.
He said one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria is related to cardiovascular diseases which most are associated with excessive salt consumption.
Also speaking, the Project Coordinator of Salt Rangers Reduction Project Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, Bukola Olukemi Odele said the Campaign would address
the pressing issue of high intake of salt in commercially
processed foods in Nigeria
which she described as a link to cardiovascular diseases.
She explained further that regular sensitization, awareness and education on high salt intake, mandatory salt reduction regulations would go a long way to save more lives and pave way for its future impact on the nation’s teeming population.
On his part, Dr. Emmanuel Sokpo, stressed the need for proper labelling of the content of substances on food products to serve as useful information for healthier food choices.
