The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Power to investigate the status of Karu 132/33KV Substation in Abuja and report within four weeks for further legislative action.
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled, “Need to Investigate the Functionality Status of the Karu 132/33KV Substation to meet the Electricity Demands of the Federal Capital Territory” sponsored by a member from Bayelsa State, Frederick Agbedi.
In his lead debate, Agbedi noted that the Karu 132/33kv substation was built by the Federal Government of Nigeria through loan obtained from the International Development Association, IDA, of the World Bank to fund the National Energy Development Project, NEDP.
He also noted that the main objective of the project was to stabilize the power supply situation in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, while collaborating with the World Bank towards achieving an efficient and robust national grid.
The Lawmaker explained that the the Karu 132/33 kV substation site is gradually sinking, causing dysfunctional and imminent collapse, thus posing a potential disaster waiting to happen.
“The House is concerned that this substation is located in a residential area that poses serious danger to human health, one can comprehend the untold damage it may cause to the lives and properties of residents in the area.
“The House noted that it was cognizant of the need to immediately relocate the substation to more effectively meet the electricity demands of the Federal Capital Territory and prevent other hazardous consequences.
Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Power and all other relevant agencies of government to ensure the relocation of the substation.
