The Chairperson, House of Representatives Press Corps and Vice Chairman of Correspondents Chapel, NUJ, FCT, Comrade Grace Ike has advocated enhanced working conditions for journalists.
In her message to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, Comrade Ike calls on media organizations, governmental bodies, and other stakeholders to take decisive actions in improving the welfare of journalists, whom she described as the cornerstone of democracy.
“As Eid el-Fitr approaches, I extend heartfelt congratulations and warm wishes to Nigerian Muslim journalists and all citizens celebrating this joyous occasion,”.
Comrade Ike underscores the significance of Ramadan as a period of reflection, compassion, and generosity, emphasizing the need for unity and support within communities, particularly for those in need.
“In the spirit of this sacred month and the celebration of Eid, it is imperative to address the challenges confronting journalists and ensure they receive the requisite support and acknowledgment,” she stressed.
“Journalists play a pivotal role in our society, serving as the guardians of truth and the watchdogs of democracy. Despite their invaluable contributions, many journalists encounter issues such as inadequate compensation, long work hours, job insecurity, and even safety concerns,” she highlighted.
“By prioritizing the well-being of journalists, we not only uphold principles of fairness and equality but also preserve the integrity and autonomy of the media, which is indispensable for a robust democracy,” she affirmed.
Recognizing the economic difficulties faced by journalists and Nigerians at large, Comrade Ike encourages all to embrace empathy, solidarity, and philanthropy.
“As we come together in celebration, let us not forget those who are less fortunate and extend our assistance to those in need. May this Eid el-Fitr be a period of joy, rejuvenation, and blessings for all.
“We extend our wishes for a blessed Eid filled with happiness, love, and prosperity to you and your families. Eid Mubarak!” Comrade Ike added.
