Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has emphasized the growing threat of desertification and the vital role of renewable energy in combating this environmental crisis.

According to Governor Zulum, desertification is rapidly encroaching, posing a substantial risk to the region’s ecosystem and livelihoods.

He stated this in Minna at the Green Economic summit Organised by the Niger state Governor, Muhammed Umar-Bago.

The Governor called for strategic investments in irrigation technology, including sprinkling irrigation, to reduce costs and support agricultural sustainability in the face of environmental challenges.

Governor Zulum commended Governor Bago’s commitment to sending a delegation to Borno State to learn from various development initiatives implemented by his administration.

He extended his support for a partnership between Borno and Niger States, emphasizing that the collaboration should extend to the entire Northern Nigeria for comprehensive development.

Speaking at the summit, Senator Abdullahi Sabi praised Governor Bago’s vision for transforming the state’s economy.

Former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, also lauded Governor Zulum for successfully returning displaced Borno indigenes to their ancestral homes after insurgent attacks in the state.

Aliyu emphasized the seriousness of addressing desertification and noted that the summit demonstrated a strong commitment to governance and environmental preservation.

He suggested implementing measures such as making farmers to plant trees on their land and providing support to empower farmers.

Aliyu who proposed the establishment of a committee involving agriculture experts and international development partners to assist farmers in Niger State stressed the importance of protecting forests and increasing tree planting efforts to enhance the environment and air quality.

He also urged the citizens of Niger State to actively participate in the initiative, emphasizing that a well-planned city should include trees around every household.
