Manchester United  have announced that forward Mason Greenwood will be leaving Old Trafford by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood’s exit is said to be by mutual agreement.

Last week, United said were in “the final stages” of making a decision on the player’s future.

Now the Premier League club and the 21-year-old have released statements explaining why he will no longer play at Old Trafford.

In a statement, the club said:

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

Greenwood who took his “share of responsibility accepted he “made mistakes, as he said;

“Today’s decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club. I thank the club for their support since I joined aged seven. There will always be a part of me which is United.”

The 21-year-old had been suspended from Manchester United training and matches while the club completed an internal investigation after the Crown Prosecution Service Discontinued its Case against Grenwood.

Greenwood, who came through Manchester United’s academy, last played for the club in January 2022.

He has one senior cap for England, having played in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.

The forwards whose contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, could now be sold or loaned to another club for the remainder of his contract.

He remains on full pay but will not return to training with United.
