First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has hailed the Super Falcons for “giving England a run for their money” even though they lost in the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Brisbane on Monday, August 7.

The first lady, in a statement by Busola Kukoyi, her media aide on Monday said the Falcons made the country proud.

The Falcons were crashed out of the WWC on Monday following a 4-2 loss on penalties to the Lionesses.

They performed spiritedly against the European champions, forcing the game into extra time and a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

The regulation time ended goalless as the European champions were forced to extra time by the resolute Falcons side and later sealed the scrappy win on penalties after surviving with 10 players at the end of 90 minutes.

The first lady said she watched the game alongside Nana Shettima, wife of the vice president, and Ekaette Akpabio, wife of the senate president.

The statement reads; “We are very proud of the girls, who played their hearts out in the Round of 16 encounters of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
