The House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security has called on the Federal Government to intensify its efforts in combating hunger and malnutrition across the country.
Chairman of the Committee, Dr Chike Okafor, made the appeal during a three-day stakeholders’ summit on nutrition and food security held at the National Assembly in Abuja.
He said the summit stemmed from a resolution of the House to address growing concerns over food insecurity, hunger and the economic toll on malnutrition in Nigeria.
Dr Okafor warned that climate change and insecurity were threatening food production and distribution, making it difficult for vulnerable populations to access nutritious food.
He urged collaboration between government ministries, development partners, state assemblies and local stakeholders to implement sustainable solutions to the nation’s nutrition crisis.
“We must take collective action to develop strategies that not only improve food access but also secure livelihoods, especially for smallholder farmers affected by the farmer-herder conflict,” he said.
The lawmaker emphasised that nutrition and food security are fundamental to the country’s human development and economic growth.
