The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has issued a final summon to the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, and the Head of the Nigeria Electrification Programme, NEP, Olufemi Akinyelure, over their failure to appear before it.
The committee is investigating grants, loans and investments in the renewable energy sector between 2015 and 2024, with a focus on the disbursement of funds, execution of projects and compliance with statutory and financial regulations.
At a resumed investigative hearing in Abuja, the Chairman of the Committee, Afam Ogene, expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as repeated disregard for invitations extended to the agency’s leadership.
He warned that if the officials fail to appear before the panel this March 5, 2026, the committee would invoke its constitutional powers to compel their attendance.
According to him, the National Assembly is empowered under the Constitution to summon any individual in the course of carrying out its oversight responsibilities and may issue a warrant of arrest where necessary.
Ogene said the probe is part of parliament’s mandate to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public and donor funds, particularly in a sector considered critical to rural electrification and economic growth.
