Nwosu Advocates Modern Igbo Apprenticeship System For Economic Growth

Former Chief of Staff to the former Governor of Imo State, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, has called for the rebuilding of the Igbo apprenticeship system to meet the needs of today’s economy.

Speaking at the 2026 Igbo National Convention organised by Igbo Union Canada, Nwosu described the apprenticeship system as one of the greatest strengths of the Igbo people, which produced generations of successful entrepreneurs.

He said the system helped rebuild the Igbo economy after the Civil War by giving young people the opportunity to learn trades, start businesses and become employers.

Nwosu, however, noted that the system must be improved to address challenges such as exploitation, failure to settle apprentices, lack of written agreements and the exclusion of women.

He called for reforms that would promote fairness, accountability, proper skills training and the use of technology to prepare young people for the global economy.

The former Chief of Staff also urged Igbo professionals in the diaspora to mentor young entrepreneurs, invest in businesses and share their knowledge to strengthen the apprenticeship system.

He proposed the initiative, “One Successful Igbo Professional, One Apprentice, One Future Enterprise,” saying it would help create more business owners and reduce unemployment.

Nwosu added that the proposed Igbo House in Canada should serve not only as a cultural centre but also as a place for business mentoring, skills development and entrepreneurship.

He urged successful Igbo men and women to invest in the next generation, stressing that the future of the Igbo economy depends on raising more entrepreneurs.
