The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urged Nigerian youths aspiring to careers in diplomacy to place love for their country above all else.
Kalu gave the advice while addressing students of International Relations from Okija campus of the Madonna University, during an excursion visit to the national assembly over the weekend.
The visit formed part of the students’ academic programme aimed at gaining practical insights into governance and foreign relations.
Speaking to the students, Kalu emphasized that effective diplomacy is rooted in patriotism rather than academic training alone.
“You must understand your country before you represent it abroad,” he said.
“Your representation begins with patriotism. Love for Nigeria is what will drive you to stand and represent the country.”
He acknowledged the country’s challenges but stressed that there is no substitute for one’s homeland, noting that national development is driven by citizens who are committed to its progress.

Kalu cited the founder of Madonna University, Rev. Father Emmanuel Matthew Edeh, as an example of nation-building anchored on patriotism, saying his contributions reflect a deep love for Nigeria.
He encouraged the students to remain committed to their aspirations, expressing hope that their ambitions to serve the country in diplomatic roles would be realized.
Earlier, the Deputy Speaker, represented by his Chief of Staff, Sam Hart, delivered a lecture titled “The Legislature and Nigeria’s External Relations in the Fourth Republic.”
In the lecture, he highlighted the role of the National Assembly in supporting the executive arm of government in achieving foreign policy objectives.
While noting that the President leads foreign policy formulation, Kalu said the legislature plays a critical role through lawmaking, oversight, and treaty domestication.
He also underscored the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy, describing it as the engagement of lawmakers with foreign governments and international organizations to advance national interests.
“The National Assembly has become a vital pillar in Nigeria’s global engagement,” he said, adding that diplomacy is increasingly shaped within parliaments where public interests intersect with national priorities.
Kalu urged the students to prepare for a dynamic and competitive global environment, calling for a new generation of leaders capable of thinking globally while serving Nigeria with dedication.
