Democracy Day : FG Commits To Strengthening Governance, National Unity

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges facing the country as Nigeria prepares to celebrate the 27th Democracy Day on June 12, 2026.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, stated this after a special Juma’at prayer as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The minister said the prayer session provided an opportunity for Nigerians to seek divine guidance and support for the nation’s continued progress, unity and stability.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s advancement requires not only effective governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of citizens in nation-building efforts.

Alhaji Idris said Democracy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes, particularly Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people continue to symbolize Nigeria’s democratic journey.

He also described the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule as a testament to the resilience of democratic institutions and the determination of Nigerians to uphold constitutional governance and democratic values.

The minister stated that under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government remains focused on deepening democracy, fostering national cohesion and implementing policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens.

While urging Nigerians to renew their commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship, Idris stressed that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity and called on citizens to reject division, embrace dialogue and work together toward building a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations.
