As political parties intensify consultations, alliances, and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, Nigerians have been urged to prioritize good governance and workable policies over political sentiments.
This formed the crux of discussions on Politics Today, a Current Affairs programme on Kapital FM, where stakeholders examined the topic: “2027 General Election: Coalition of Political Parties, Realignments and the Future of Nigeria’s Political System.”
Speaking on the programme, Public Affairs Analyst, Dr. Dele Fulani, identified internal party crises, defections, and political interests as major factors driving the ongoing political realignments across the country.
According to him, “Internal party democracy is critical to producing credible candidates and strengthening the electoral process. Without transparency and fairness within political parties, the nation’s democracy may continue to face setbacks.”
Dr. Fulani stressed that Nigerians should pay closer attention to leadership capacity and policy direction as political activities gather momentum ahead of the polls.
Also contributing, Legal Practitioner and Political Analyst, Michael Ochili, observed that the absence of clear ideological differences among political parties had continued to encourage defections and unstable political coalitions.
He noted that, “Political parties must be driven by ideology and national interest rather than personal ambition. This will help promote stability and accountability within the democratic system.”
Mr. Ochili further emphasized the importance of judicial pronouncements in resolving political disputes, saying court decisions should reinforce democratic values and ensure fairness in the political process.
The guests collectively called on political leaders to embrace issue-based politics, unity, and credible democratic processes as essential ingredients for deepening democracy and sustaining national development.
