Stakeholders in the housing sector have called for wider adoption of the cooperative housing scheme across Africa as a practical response to rising housing shortages in the continent.
Speaking in Abuja ahead of the Cooperative Housing Summit Africa (CHOSA AFRICA 2026), a retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Yemi Adelakun said cooperative housing offers one of the most realistic paths to closing the continent’s housing gap, particularly for low and middle-income earners who can’t afford conventional mortgage systems.
Dr. Adelakun who is also the converner of the Summit said rapid urbanization, and the growing cost of home ownership have necessitated the need for cooperative housing to address housing deficit especially for civil servants before retirement.
According to him, we will continue to champion ideas that inspire hope, innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development across the continent. NISH Affordable Housing, has become a strong voice for accessible and dignified housing, touching countless lives with initiatives aimed at bridging the housing gap in Nigeria and Africa at large.”
“The Sunmit will bring together stakeholders across the globe for peer review, and shared experience which will no doubt proffer more solution towards ensuring that the housing deficit is reduced to the nearest minimum.”
Mr. Adelakun explained that Cooperative housing allows individuals and groups to pool resources, share costs, and collectively secure affordable housing with flexible payment options.
