A Public Affairs Analyst, Gbenga Odubayo, has described the recent approval of increased public service allowances by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a timely and commendable intervention aimed at improving the welfare, morale, and productivity of Nigerian workers.
Mr. Odubayo made the remarks while speaking on Perspectives, a current affairs programme on Kapital FM in Abuja.
Speaking on the topic, “Implications of President Tinubu’s Approval of Increased Public Service Allowances: Revisiting Workers’ Welfare,” the analyst clarified that the presidential approval was not an increment in the national minimum wage but rather a review of allowances attached to public service employment.
According to him, the development affects components such as housing, transportation, and other entitlements due to federal civil servants.
“What the government has done is to review allowances that workers are entitled to receive. This is different from increasing the minimum wage. These allowances are meant to cushion the economic realities workers are currently facing,” he said.
Mr. Odubayo noted that the policy was coming at a critical period when many Nigerian workers were struggling with rising living costs and economic hardship across the country.
He explained that improving workers’ welfare would likely translate into increased efficiency and commitment within the public service.
“Increasing workers’ allowances at this time is a welcome development because it has the potential to boost morale and improve productivity in the public sector,” he stated.
The analyst further described the intervention as long overdue, stressing that many civil servants had endured difficult economic conditions for years without corresponding improvements in welfare packages.
He, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure the full implementation of the approved allowances and sustain policies targeted at enhancing workers’ welfare.
Mr. Odubayo warned that failure to fulfil promises made to civil servants could weaken public confidence in government policies and reduce trust in public institutions.
“Government must remain committed to fulfilling its promises to workers. Consistency in welfare policies is important in building trust and confidence among citizens,” he added.
The recent approval of increased public service allowances by the Federal Government has continued to generate reactions from labour stakeholders, economists, and policy analysts, many of whom believe the move could help ease the financial burden on public servants amid prevailing economic challenges in the country.
