LP Begins Nationwide Ward Congresses Ahead Of Convention

todayApril 23, 2026

Background

The Labour Party has begun its nationwide ward congresses ahead of its upcoming national convention, with members across the country electing new executives at the grassroots level.

The party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, participated in the exercise in Jere South Ward, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, alongside members of Jere North Ward where the congress was jointly held.

Speaking after the exercise, Senator Usman described the process as peaceful and well organised, adding that the next stages would be the local government and state congresses before the national convention slated for April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State.

She reaffirmed the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and gender balance, calling for greater participation of women in leadership and party administration.

According to her, the congresses were held across the country’s 8,809 political wards, while elected ward executives will participate in local government congresses on April 24 and state congresses on April 25.

Senator Usman also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for promptly deploying monitoring teams nationwide and urged members to maintain peace throughout the remaining stages of the process.
