Opposition Urged To Re-strategize Ahead Of 2027 Elections

todayApril 18, 2026

Background

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, a legal practitioner, Mr. Gbolahan Ogunmola, has called on opposition political parties to put aside personal interests and ego-driven politics, and focus on resolving internal leadership crises.

Mr. Ogunmola made the call while featuring on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Kapital FM, Abuja.

Speaking on the topic, “2027 in Focus: Can Nigeria’s Opposition Parties Rebuild, Realign and Mount a Serious Challenge for Power?”, he urged opposition parties not to be discouraged by the dominance of ruling parties, but rather work towards strengthening their internal structures.

“Opposition parties must prioritise full participation, build strong policies, develop credible manifestos, and present capable candidates if they are to mount a serious challenge in 2027″, he said.

Also speaking on the programme, a Political Analyst and Convener of the Geopolitics Series, Senator Iroegbu, noted that internal crises are not unusual in democratic system.

He, however, stressed the importance of timely reconciliation within opposition parties, warning that unresolved conflicts could weaken their relevance ahead of the elections.

In his words, “Citizens must remain politically conscious, but opposition parties must first put their house in order to earn public trust and remain viable contenders.”

Both guests further called on Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral process, including voter registration, political campaigns, and voting, as a way of strengthening democracy and ensuring accountability in governance.
