The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has stated that the strength and credibility of any opposition party in Nigeria will ultimately be determined by its ability to secure electoral victory, not by claims or political alignments.
Speaking during a visit to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, Wike emphasised that winning elections remains the only legitimate benchmark for assessing the popularity and relevance of opposition parties.
According to him, parties that fail to win elections cannot credibly present themselves as leading opposition forces, stressing that performance at the polls is the true reflection of public support.
Wike reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP’s newly elected National Working Committee (NWC), noting that his visit was aimed at demonstrating solidarity and encouraging unity as the party continues its rebuilding process.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he said.
He acknowledged that the PDP had experienced internal crises but expressed optimism that the party was gradually overcoming its challenges through collective effort and commitment.
Wike urged the party leadership to prioritise reconciliation by reaching out to aggrieved members and those who had defected, noting that many still have interest in the party’s future.
In his response, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, assured that the new leadership would work towards repositioning the party and restoring public confidence ahead of the 2027 general election.
The remarks came amid ongoing political realignments, as opposition parties strategise to strengthen their positions and win over voters in the next electoral cycle.
The visit also underscores growing efforts within the PDP to reassert its dominance as Nigeria’s foremost opposition party, amid increasing competition and shifting political alliances.
