The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to Formulate new policies to guide resettlement practices within the territory, citing concerns that urbanization is threatening indigenous communities.
This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by member representing
Keffi/Karu/Kokona Federal Constituency in Nasarawa State, Jonathan Gaza.
In his lead debate, the lawmaker noted that the FCT’s rapid urbanization is eroding the cultural and historical heritage of native communities while also creating slums and safe havens for criminal activities.
Gaza expressed concern that previous resettlement policies have yielded little result, with five policies formulated by the Department of Resettlement having minimal impact.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters to collaborate with the Minister of the Federal Capitaldon’t Territory to develop alternative resettlement strategies and report back within four weeks.
