The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution has extended the deadline for submissions on the creation of additional states and local governments in Nigeria.
In a statement in Abuja,
the Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu, announces that the new deadline is March 26, 2025, instead of the initial March 5, 2025, .
The Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who is also the Chairman of the Review Committee, noted that the extension is in response to public requests for more time, adding that the committee remains committed to supporting legitimate efforts that align with constitutional provisions.
The Chairman of the committee also reminded proponents of state and local governments that creation must comply with Section 8(1) of the Constitution, which requires a request supported by at least a two-third majority of members representing the affected area.
Kalu maintains that only proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines will be considered.
