Run Club Abuja (RCA), a fitness and healthy lifestyle community, is set to host a 10km charity run in Abuja aimed at combating period poverty, as they believe the first “RCA Women’s Run” is a movement that celebrates the strength, determination, and unity of women from all works of life.

Onyebuchi Ibe, the organizing committee chairperson made this assertion during a press conference as she announced Saturday, 22nd February, 2025 as the date for the maiden edition to commemorate 2025 Women’s Day.

She also added that the initiative aims to eliminate period poverty and ensure young girls can focus on their education as the proceeds from the run will support 500 students in selected public schools within the FCT providing six months’ worth of sanitary supplies.

“This initiative is the first of its kind in Abuja and goes beyond being just an event, it’s a movement, celebrating the strength, determination, and unity of women from all walks of life. The run covers about 10 kilometer routes, accommodating everyone from seasoned athletes to beginners.

Proceeds from this run will support 500 students in selected public schools within the FCT for providing six months’ worth of sanitary supplies. The initiative aims to eliminate period poverty and ensure young girls can focus on their education without barriers.”

The chairperson went further to encourage women to come and challenge themselves as the run is for women as the event won’t be a one off. While also urging the government, non-governmental organizations, and religious institutions to support young girls by addressing health challenges, including the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.

“The run gives women the platform to challenge themselves, break barriers, and embark on journeys of self-discovery and empowerment.

We urge stakeholders to adopt policies addressing women needs and dignity. We envision this event becoming an annual tradition that continues to inspire and drive social change.”

Also speaking, Dr. Chito Nwigene, one of the sponsors for the event acknowledged that the run will help bridge the period poverty and help women stand confidently and think beyond barriers.

“This initiative to provide six months’ worth of menstrual sanitary pads to these young ladies will bridge the period poverty, will help them stand confidently before their peers, before their world, and will give them the opportunity to think beyond barriers.

We know that as thousands of women all over Abuja gather together to run on this date, February 22nd, to commemorate the Women’s Day, we hope that as they do so, they remember that everything they contribute will be given to empowering people, empowering women who will one day stand as they stand, walk as they walk, run as they run, and be able to equally give back to the community.”

Meanwhile, another sponsor claimed that the event stands as a testament of women’s resilience and determination as they aim to celebrate women achievement and foster community building.

The maiden edition of the Run Club Abuja Women’s Run 10K is an all-women long-distance race expecting at least 500 participants. The race will start and finish at City Park in Abuja.

All participants, running, jogging, working, will receive a medal to honor their achievements.
