FRSC Decries Accidents Involving Trailers Overloaded With Passengers

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC has expressed concern over the number of road accidents involving trailers overloaded with passengers and goods across the country.

Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu who raised the concern during the FRSC Sallah mega rally at Zuba Central motor park in Abuja said the ugly incidences led to the formation of an Inter Agency Joint Task Force to arrest the situation.

Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal Operations, Shehu Zaki, the Corps Marshal said the Task Force had been directed to operate along critical corridors with Thirty Five trailers carrying about One Thousand passengers apprehended in the last Thee weeks.

He appealed to transport union leaders to support FRSC towards bringing sanity to the highway while the Corps was working with the Nigeria Bar Association and State judiciaries to ensure adequate prosecution of traffic offenders.

Earlier, FCT Sector Commander Mr Muta’a Chorrie urged passengers to avoid boarding overloaded vehicles and report any act of indiscipline at any motor park for immediate intervention.

The FCT Sector Commander used the forum to educate drivers and Passengers on the dangers associated with overloading, over speeding, lane indiscipline, use of phone while driving and drunk driving.

 

Speaking on behalf of transport unions, Alhaji Umar Abubakar of the National Association of Road Transport Owners said not less than ten members have been suspended for overloading and other traffic offenses in the last three months by the leadership of the Unions.

Alhaji Abubakar pledged the Union’s readiness to support the present administration in making roads safer for economic activities in the country.

Representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other paramilitary organisations promised to assist FRSC during the Special Sallah Operation.
