Resume N-Power, Other Social Investment Programs- Reps To FG

todayMarch 13, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to resume the payment of N-Power and other Social Investment Programs to ease the sufferings being faced by Vulnerable Nigerians.

This is sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance Sponsored by a member representing Orhionwon Uhumwode, of Edo State, Mr. Billy Osawaru, who said the resumed payment of N-Power and other Social Investment Programs would reduce poverty and hunger in the country.

He noted that the halting of the program as a result of suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and the sacking of the National Coordinator of the Social Investment Program has further subjected vulnerable Nigerians who are beneficiaries of the program to more hardship and could as well lead to social unrest

The Lawmaker emphasized that the call for the resumption of payment for the program was for stability, development and to ensure equitable distribution of wealth among the citizens.

According to him, the planned steering committee Board to be supervised by the Minister of Finance is abnormal, as establishment of the Social Investment Program was an act of Parliament that will always require legislative amendment before it could be supervised by another body.

Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Government to expedite action to complete the ongoing investigation of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The House also urged the Federal Government to put on hold the planned establishment of a Steering Committee Board to oversee the Program.
