Twenty-four Abuja indigent students in public secondary schools have been given scholarships to complete their education by the University of Lagos Alumni Association.

The Mandate Secretary FCT Education Secretariat, Dr Danlami Hayyo presented the scholarship award to the students in Abuja.

Dr Hayyo thanked the group for the support, which he described as encouraging, and urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate them.

“This is what we are expecting from so many people. People who have enough should contribute to the education sector, especially in the provision of infrastructure, scholarships, and other needs. This is because the government cannot fund education 100 percent, “Hayyo said.

Some of the beneficiaries, Abdulhamid Mubarak and Grace Dantani commended the association for giving back tosocietyy, and expressed their joy that their bills to complete their secondary education have been covered.

Others merely described the gesture as a life changer and noted that their parent’s struggle to pay their school fees every term was over.

“Sometimes I work on farms, sometimes at construction sites or some form of hard labour just to raise money to help my parents pay for my school fees. But now all the struggles are over. With this scholarship, I’ll complete my secondary education with confidence, we feel so happy and grateful to the alumni association “.

“Honestly, we feel so happy, and we are rejoicing for the scholarship support. Many of us were not sure whether we were going to write West African Examination Council, WAEC, with our fellow students, but because of the scholarship support, we are confident we will graduate”.

Earlier, the Chairman, of the Scholarship Committee of the Association said the association would disburse N2.5 million under the bursary award, adding that each of the 24 students would receive over N100,000 to cover tuition fees for six terms.

Ibe also said the scholarship would also cover the students’ WAEC and National Examination Council registration fees.

The Association’s Chairman in FCT, Aliu Akoshile, said the decision to support the indigent students was influenced by the need to give opportunities to children from poor households to grow academically and socially.
