The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has urged Nigerian students to prioritize and revive the reading culture as a means of understanding the world and finding innovative solutions to societal challenges.

Speaking at a Young Leadership Clinic event held at the Social Science Lecture Theatre, University of Abuja, the Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of imbibing a reading culture, stating that it opens up a world of knowledge, broadens horizons, and empowers students with wisdom.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Toby Okechukwu, the Deputy Speaker addressed school prefects from Senior Secondary Schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the event, which was themed “Demands of Leadership.”

In his speech, he highlighted the remarkable contributions of past Nigerian leaders such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, and Obafemi Awolowo, who shaped the nation’s history through their commitment to education and their passion for reading.

Recalling his own journey into leadership, Kalu mentioned that his sense of responsibility and dedication were nurtured during his time as a school prefect in secondary school.

He emphasized that effective leadership requires a deep understanding of the complex world, empathy for the challenges faced by fellow citizens, and an unwavering dedication to the betterment of the society.

The Deputy Speaker advised the students to recognize the power of knowledge and emphasized that those who prepare for tomorrow are the ones who will shape it. By cultivating a reading culture, students can equip themselves with the necessary tools to navigate the challenges they may encounter in the future.
