The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has called for the protection and education of the girl child across Nigeria.
Mr. Kalu made this advocacy during a meeting with leaders of the Students Vanguard for Girl Child Education in Nigeria, held in his office in Abuja.
During the meeting, Mr. Kalu emphasized that it is a disservice to any nation to neglect the education of its young ones, regardless of gender.
He highlighted the lack of awareness regarding the challenges faced by many underprivileged girls in the country and commended the organization for taking up the important task of advocating for the girl child.
Mr. Kalu also expressed concern about the recent incident of schoolgirls abductions in northern Nigeria, stating that such events instill fear in girls and discourage them from attending school.
However, he assured that the government is actively working to address the issue and reduce the number of out-of-school girls.
The Deputy Speaker, further pledged the support of the National Assembly in amplifying the organization’s voice and advocating for the rights of the girl child.
Earlier, President of the Female Students Vanguard for Girl Child Education in Nigeria, Khadija Sulaiman Gidado, presented the numerous challenges faced by the girl child in the country.
She emphasized that the organization’s primary focus is on ensuring access to education for girls.
Khadija pointed out that in Nigeria, education is often perceived as a privilege for boys, hence there is need to address this gender imbalance.
Additionally, Khadija highlighted the lack of access to sanitary products for young girls, which poses a significant obstacle to their education.
She further appealed for support to meet the organization’s needs and execute their projects effectively.
