The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, has called on the Federal Government, Security agencies and appropriate authorities to intervene in calling the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT IRS) to order with regards to the collection of revenue of the council.
The council’s supervisory councillor, Special duties, Mr Emmanuel Iyang who made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja said AMAC had not signed any formal agreement with the FCT-IRS concerning revenue collection.
Mr Iyang said harassing AMAC and FCT residents in paying taxes they had already paid to AMAC, would give room for double taxation.
According to the Supervisory Councillor, a court has already ruled that AMAC should not relegate the role of revenue collection to a third party, hence the FCT-IRS should explain where it derived its powers to collect revenue on behalf of AMAC.
Mr Iyang said that, at a recent townhall meeting organized by FCT-IRS involving the six area councils in the FCT, on revenue harmonisation, the Permanent Secretary of the FCT, Dr Olusade Adesola been the driver of revenue harmonisation, left the meeting halfway hence they couldn’t reach a consensus.
The Supervisory Councillor therefore, urged President Tinubu and the concerned authorities to as a matter of urgency, call the FCT-IRS to order to avert a crisis.
He also advised residents not to pay revenue to agents purportedly to be FCT IRS, otherwise they will pay double as only the revenue paid into AMAC account will be acceptable.
