Background

The FIFA women’s world cup had it’s maiden edition in China 1991 and has since been a quadrennial tournament, seeing five countries lifting the trophy in eight different occasions.

The ninth FIFA women’s world cup  kicked off  earlier today which saw co-host New Zealand secure a one nil victory over 1995 champions Norway, while co-host Australia also saw of Republic of Ireland with the same goal margin.

As the FIFA women’s world cup is ongoing, here are 5 things you need to know about the tournament.

1. New Zealand and Australia are co-host of the women’s world cup

This is the first time in the history of the women’s world cup that two countries are hosting the event.

2. 32 countries will be participating in this years world cup for the first time

COUNTRIES IN THE WOMENS WORLD CUP

The countries have been divided into eight groups, with Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, and Morocco representing Africa.

3. Nigeria is the only African country to appear in every single world cup alongside Brazil, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and United States of America (USA)

The Super Falcons will kick off their campaign against Canada on Friday July 21.

4. All past winners and host of the tournament qualified for this years world cup with none being from Africa

Past winners; USA(1991,1999,2015,2019), Norway(1995), Germany(2003,2007), Japan(2011).

Past host; China(1991,2007), Sweden(1995), USA(1999,2003), Germany (2011), Canada(2015), France(2019).

5. Winner of the competition will go home with $10.5 million

All players get at least $30,000, and $270,000 for each of the 23 players on the World Cup-winning team.
