todayMarch 20, 2025

Background

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to cover the medical expenses of victims involved in the tragic motor accident that occurred in Karu, Abuja, on Wednesday evening.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed deep sympathy for those affected, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and ensuring continued medical care for the injured.

Describing the accident as avoidable, the minister emphasized the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly among heavy-duty vehicle drivers.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Wike immediately directed the Mandate Secretary for Health and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to oversee the treatment of the injured.

Dr. Fasawe remained at Asokoro District Hospital until Thursday morning, working alongside medical personnel attending to the 17 casualties.

According to her, after initial stabilization, seven patients were transferred to the National Hospital for further treatment, while six with minor injuries were successfully treated and discharged.

“Three victims with severe burns, inhalation injuries, and crush wounds remained under medical care.”

“Unfortunately, one patient with third-degree burns did not survive despite resuscitation efforts.”

Wike reiterated the importance of road safety, urging drivers to exercise caution and comply with speed limits to prevent such tragedies.

He also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure safer road usage.
