The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Delegated Legislation, Member Representing Aguta Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Mr. Dominic Okafor has threatened to sue for defamation over allegations that he collected a $140 million bribe from Binance Cryptocurrency.
An online newspaper had in its Thursday edition alleged that Okafor collected $140 million from Binance to facilitate the exoneration of its executives who were declared wanted by the Nigerian government.
“Okafor had moved a motion and called for the investigation into the escape of a Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla from the custody of the National Security Adviser, NSA.
At a Media Conference in Abuja, Okafor said the publication was an attempt to smear his name.
He denied that he neither met with any Binance executive or collected bribe from anybody and that he was discussing with his lawyers on the next line of action.
“Immediately the story was published, I did a letter to Premium Times, who originated the story. I copied the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Inspector General of Police. I asked Premium Times to withdraw the story and apologise, failure to do so, I will take legal action”.
“A young man called from Premium Times this morning and said they were sorry. They discovered the story was wrong. They have pulled down the story but I discovered the one on Twitter saying that I collected $140milliom has not been pulled down.
” I am here to exonerate myself. I did not demand any bribe and I did not collect any bribe from Binance or anybody. I am innocent and I want my name to be cleared”, he stated.
Okafor, who also chairs the House Committee on Nigeria-Norway Relations said the story was capable of tarnishing his image and integrity, which he has built over the years as a private businessman and a member of the Rotary International for over 25 years.
He said as a lawmaker, he has not and will never be involved in any criminal or dubious deal adding that he was committed to representing his constituents and working for the betterment of Nigeria.
