Ameh Seeks Early U.S. Election Monitoring in Nigeria

todayJuly 16, 2026

Background

Former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Mr. Peter Ameh, has called on the United States and other international partners to begin early and sustained monitoring of Nigeria’s 2027 general election to safeguard the country’s democratic process.

A statement signed by him in Abuja, describes the development as a welcome step but stressed that its effectiveness would depend on concrete actions rather than mere diplomatic declarations.

The statement argues that international election monitoring should extend beyond election-day observation to include close scrutiny of the pre-election environment, particularly allegations of actions that could undermine the ability of opposition parties to freely organise, campaign and participate in the electoral process.

It maintains that the survival and deepening of Nigeria’s democracy depend on peaceful, free and fair elections that genuinely reflect the will of the electorates, adding that transparent monitoring of the entire electoral cycle remains essential.

According to the statement, the former IPAC chairman further alleges that the current administration has shown limited willingness to allow opposition parties to operate without interference and urged the United States and other international stakeholders to consistently engage Nigerian authorities and political actors ahead of the 2027 elections.

It notes that actions taken before the polls would significantly influence the credibility of the electoral outcome, stressing that credible elections in Nigeria are critical not only for national stability but also for democratic governance across Africa.

It therefore urges the United States to move beyond public statements and commit to robust, sustained and principled engagement aimed at protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process throughout the electoral timeline.
