Reps Demand Rescue Of 42 Abducted Borno Schoolchildren

todayJune 2, 2026

Background

The House of Representatives has demanded the immediate rescue of 42 abducted schoolchildren in Borno State, warning that recurring attacks on schools are worsening insecurity and disrupting education across affected communities.

The House also called for stronger protection of schools, including increased deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering and faster response to attacks in vulnerable areas.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by member representing

Askira-Uba/Hawul federal Constituency of Borno State, Midala Balami, who raised concern over the abduction in Mussa Ward of Askira-Uba Local Government Area.

Presenting the motion during plenary, Balami said the protection of students, teachers and school communities remains a core responsibility of government at all levels.

He cited previous mass abductions in the state, including the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping, as well as attacks in Ngoshe and along the Biu-Buratai road, noting that many victims are still missing.

The Lawmakers said the repeated attacks have created widespread fear among residents, reduced school enrollment and attendance, and left families traumatized.

The lawmakers further advocated expanding school safety initiatives such as early warning systems, community-based security arrangements and improved surveillance around schools.

The House mandated its committees on national security, defense, basic education and legislative compliance to liaise with relevant agencies and report back on efforts to rescue the victims and strengthen school security nationwide.

The Lawmakers also called on the government to develop and implement a comprehensive safe schools framework to protect students, teachers and educational institutions from future attacks.
