Study Electoral Act To Strengthen Justice System – Kalu Urges NBA

Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has urged the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to study the Electoral Act and other laws passed by the National Assembly to strengthen the country’s judicial system.

Kalu made the call while receiving chairmen of NBA branches in Abia State, led by Aba branch chairman Charles
Onuchukwu.

Kalu described lawyers as “instruments of justice” and the voice of both ordinary citizens and the elite, urging the legal profession to remain steadfast.

“Beyond money, the voice of the common man should be heard.
You are there because there is a need for justice and equity,” Kalu said, adding that while Lady Justice is blind, “the eyes of justice should be wide open to see what is just and fair.”

Kalu also stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the Bar and Parliament, noting that lawmakers continually work to close gaps in existing laws.

The Deputy speaker urged lawyers to stay current with new legislations, particularly the Electoral Act.

“Every day in parliament, we build structures and systems that will be self-auditing,” he said. “This is the time the Bench and the Bar should be studying the Electoral Act.”

The deputy speaker called for greater recognition of lawyers serving in parliament for their role in lawmaking, noting that they help produce the laws used in courtrooms.

He also welcomed the establishment of the NBA’s Bende branch in Abia State and pledged support, including plans to build an office complex and provide a bus for the branch.

Kalu said he may donate a property for the project, describing it as part of his legacy and commitment to the legal profession.
