Media Urged To Deepen Relations Between Nigeria, China

todayMay 20, 2026

Background

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening media collaboration and deepening people-to-people exchanges between China and Nigeria, describing the media as a vital bridge in fostering stronger diplomatic and cultural ties between both nations.

This was the highlight of remarks delivered by the Minister, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Abuja, Mr. Zhou Hongyou at a conference organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria DICAN, themed “Information Warfare (FIMI): Strengthening Global Security, Trade, and Investment through Collaborative Truth: Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence, and Media.

Speaking at the event, the Chinese Minister described the gathering as “an important conference” aimed at reinforcing the long-standing friendship between Nigeria and China, while extending appreciation to Nigerian media organizations and professionals who have consistently reported and shared stories of bilateral cooperation.

According to the Embassy, the year 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria, as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, noting that the relationship between both countries has remained strong for over five decades.

The Embassy stated that China and Nigeria have continued to build ties based on “mutual respect, win-win cooperation, and close people-to-people bonds,” describing the partnership as a shining example of China-Africa relations.

Highlighting areas of cooperation, the Embassy noted that both countries have collaborated extensively in trade, infrastructure, finance, industry, education, peace and security, as well as talent development.

It further disclosed that China recently introduced a zero-tariff policy for all 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with Beijing, including Nigeria, in a move aimed at opening the Chinese market to more African products.

“Since May 1, China has granted zero-tariff treatment to all 53 African countries with diplomatic ties, including Nigeria, opening our vast market to more high-quality Nigerian goods,” the Embassy stated.

The Embassy also emphasized the importance of cultural and educational exchanges between both nations, pointing out that activities organized by the Chinese Cultural Center in Nigeria have continued to strengthen interpersonal relationships between citizens of both countries.

Special recognition was given to Nigerian journalists for what the Embassy described as their professionalism and commitment in promoting China-Nigeria friendship.

“You are the most faithful recorders, the most powerful communicators, and the most dedicated champions of China-Nigeria friendship,” he noted.

The Embassy stressed that the media in both countries carry a major responsibility in ensuring objective and fair reporting, especially on issues relating to the national interests of both nations.

Particular attention was drawn to the Taiwan question, which China described as central to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Embassy commended Nigerian media organizations for what it termed accurate reporting and support for the One-China principle.

Referencing the joint statement issued during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to China in September 2024, the Embassy reiterated Nigeria’s position on the issue.

The statement quoted Nigeria as affirming that:

“There is but one China in the world, that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.”

It also reaffirmed Nigeria’s opposition to any form of “Taiwan independence” and support for China’s efforts toward national reunification.

The Chinese Embassy urged Nigerian media practitioners to continue reporting on China “with truth and facts,” while promoting authentic stories capable of deepening mutual understanding between the peoples of both countries.

On media development and capacity building, the Embassy disclosed that nearly 20 major Nigerian media organizations were recently invited to China for training and study tours.
According to the Embassy, participants received training on China’s national development, poverty alleviation strategies, the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese modernization, and the China-Africa community with a shared future.

The delegation also engaged with major Chinese media organizations, including Xinhua News Agency and China Global Television Network, on digital journalism, program production, and international communication strategies.

The Embassy said the initiative is part of broader efforts under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, FOCAC, aimed at strengthening technological partnerships and improving media efficiency across Africa.

Looking ahead, the Embassy pledged continued engagement with Nigerian media organizations through training programmes, study visits, exchange opportunities, and collaborative projects designed to enhance journalistic capacity and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

“Together, let’s build a stronger, more dynamic media partnership to bring our peoples closer, boost our broader cooperation, and write a new chapter in our comprehensive strategic partnership,” the Embassy stated.

The conference ended with renewed calls for sustained collaboration between China and Nigeria, particularly in the media sector, as both countries continue efforts to deepen diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations.
