FCTA Focuses On Work Place Wellness In Combating Hypertension

todayMay 20, 2026

Background

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has intensified efforts to combat hypertension across Abuja through awareness campaigns, free screenings, and workplace wellness initiatives.

Speaking at a free medical outreach and awareness campaign as part of activities lined up to mark World Hypertension Day, the Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator of the FCT Public Health Department, Dr. Olubunmi Adeyemi, said the administration was focusing on workers’ welfare because people spend significant time in work environments.

Dr. Adeyemi warned that hypertension remains a major public health concern due to its silent nature and life-threatening complications,

He urged individuals already diagnosed with hypertension to adhere strictly to prescribed medications and seek treatment only from qualified health professionals and recognized medical facilities.

The coordinator added that the administration was also promoting healthier lifestyles through urban development initiatives, including the construction of walkways to encourage physical activity among residents.

He said the department would also reactivate regular physical exercise programmes for staff as part of broader efforts to promote workplace wellness and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in the territory.

The Head of Administration, FCT Public Health Department, Mrs. Joy Ameh, said the administration was also promoting healthier lifestyles through urban development initiatives, including the construction of walkways to encourage physical activity among residents.

A beneficiary of the medical outreach, Mrs Sarah Yamusa said the free screening was timely and lifesaving for her, as she had no prior knowledge of her status and had never been placed on medication.

According to her, repeated blood pressure checks conducted during the outreach confirmed consistently elevated readings, while her blood sugar level was also found to be high.

She explained that she had never been placed on medication for hypertension before and described the screening exercise as timely and lifesaving.

According to her, seeing the awareness banner at the venue encouraged her to participate in the screening.

The health experts urged the public to always avail themselves for free medical outreaches and screenings, stressing that many people may appear healthy but are living with serious conditions like hypertension or diabetes.
