CDS Calls For Responsible Journalism To Curb Terrorism, Misinformation

Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has urged journalists to adopt factual, balanced and conflict-sensitive reporting, saying responsible journalism can weaken terrorism and banditry.

Speaking at the 2026 press week lecture and awards ceremony organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Federal Capital Territory chapter, Oluyede said accurate reporting deprives criminal groups of the “oxygen they thrive on.”

Oluyede, who was represented by the Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, Samaila Uba, said the theme of the event, “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Misinformation,” reflects Nigeria’s complex security and information environment.

“The media remains a critical pillar of our democracy and a vital instrument for national cohesion, public enlightenment and accountability,” he said.

He added that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to protecting lives and property, noting that the military and the press must work together to ensure national stability.

“While the military secures the physical space, the media shapes the information space. The narratives you project influence public perception, improve morale and even affect the strategic outcomes of military operations,” Oluyede said.

“When reporting is factual, balanced and conflict-sensitive, it denies oxygen to terrorism, banditry and disinformation. It builds trust between the armed forces and the people we serve.”

He stressed that in the digital age, where information spreads rapidly, journalists must verify information before publication and balance national interest with truth.

Oluyede also commended members of the NUJ FCT chapter for their resilience and professionalism.

In her remarks, NUJ FCT Chairperson, Grace Ike, said the press week provides an opportunity for journalists to reflect on the profession and recommit to ethical standards.

“As we move closer to the 2027 general election, the media must remain vigilant, responsible and courageous in the face of misinformation, fake news, propaganda and deliberate attempts to distort public opinion,” she said.

Ike added that the media has a duty to uphold truth, ensure accountability and safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
