A former Nigerian High Commissioner to Singapore, Ogbole Ode, has called on African countries to deepen regional unity and promote peaceful coexistence among citizens to accelerate development across the continent.
Ambassador Ode made the call while speaking on Perspectives, a current affairs programme on Kapital FM in Abuja, while discussing the topic: “Regional Unity and the Challenge of Xenophobic Violence Across the African Continent.”
He warned that xenophobic attacks and discrimination against foreigners pose serious threats to regional peace, economic integration and diplomatic relations among African nations.
According to him, Africans must begin to see one another as brothers and partners in progress rather than rivals or strangers.
“Africans should see themselves as one people and work together to promote peace, unity and development across the continent,” he said.
Ambassador Ode stressed that the rise in xenophobic violence in some African countries could create tension, discourage investment and weaken efforts aimed at achieving regional cooperation and economic growth.
He noted that intolerance and hostility toward foreigners could also place unnecessary pressure on governments and negatively affect the continent’s economy.
“Why do we attack fellow Africans who are only trying to survive or contribute to the economy? Xenophobia will only create division and slow down Africa’s development,” he stated.
The former envoy further urged governments, political leaders and relevant organisations to intensify public enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of xenophobia and the importance of tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
He also called on the African Union and other stakeholders to establish programmes and policies that would strengthen unity and foster lasting peace across the continent.
Ambassador Ode maintained that sustainable development in Africa could only be achieved in an atmosphere of unity, cooperation and mutual understanding among citizens of member states.
