Health Walk : NUJ FCT Chair Urges Journalists To Prioritise Mental Health

todayMay 18, 2026

Background

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called on journalists to prioritise their mental health and adopt healthier coping mechanisms to manage the pressures of the profession.

Speaking at the 2026 NUJ Health Walk in Abuja, Ike said the theme, “Mental Health and Stress Management in High-Pressure Work Environments,” underscores the growing concerns around the wellbeing of media professionals.

She said journalists in the nation’s capital routinely face intense demands, including long working hours, tight deadlines, exposure to risk and the challenge of combating misinformation.

“We work late into the night to break news. We face danger to report the truth. We deal with angry leaders, fake news and constant deadlines. All this builds up stress that can affect our mental and physical health,” Ike said.

According to her, the health walk forms part of activities lined up for the NUJ Press Week designed to promote wellness, foster unity among members and raise awareness about mental health challenges within the media industry.

She noted that beyond physical fitness, the initiative provides a platform for journalists to unwind, interact and share experiences in a relaxed environment.

“As we walk together through the streets of Abuja, we are not just exercising; we are building a support system. We are reminding ourselves that we are not alone in the struggles we face daily,” she said.

Ike warned that neglecting mental health could lead to burnout, reduced productivity and long-term health complications, stressing that journalists must deliberately cultivate habits that support their wellbeing.

She advised members to take short breaks during work, seek professional help when necessary, maintain proper hydration, get adequate sleep and participate in recreational activities.

The NUJ chairman also urged media organisations, employers and relevant stakeholders to create supportive work environments by introducing policies that encourage work-life balance, access to mental health resources and improved safety measures for journalists on duty.

She further called for sustained advocacy to ensure that the welfare of journalists remains a priority at both institutional and national levels.

Ike commended the Press Week organising committee for successfully putting together the event, describing it as timely and impactful.

She also expressed appreciation to sponsors and partners for their support in promoting the wellbeing of journalists.

Participants at the event included members of the NUJ, media executives and other stakeholders, many of whom lauded the initiative and called for its sustenance.

The health walk concluded with renewed calls for journalists to remain committed to their profession while taking deliberate steps to safeguard their mental and physical health.
