NCoS Flags-off 2026 Farming Season

todayApril 24, 2026

Background

As part of efforts to boost the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates through agriculture, the Nigerian Correctional Service has officially commenced its 2026 farming season.

The Controller General, Sylvester Nwakuche who flagged off the exercise at the Dukpa Farm Centre in Gwagwalada, Abuja said it is part of the centre’s vocational training to equip inmates with farming skills to enable them contribute to national food security.

” We are here to flag off the farming season in the Nigerian Correctional Service nationwide. We are using Dukpa as a contact to reach other farm centers that the farming season has commenced.

It is part of our vocational training for our inmates. It is part of teaching them how to acquire a skill so that upon this charge, they will be useful to the society. So, Dukpa is a place in Abuja where we have our farms, poultry, piggy, we even have our cattle rearing facilities.”

Sylvester Nwakuche who attributed the poor production of the 2025 farming season to natural disaster, called for public and private partnership to help achieve a better result this year.

“The farming season was not too encouraging, we did well but the pricing was not too encouraging because you know what happened, prices deeped and we had all sorts of natural disaster in some of our facilities that impacted negatively in our output but generally speaking as it concerns the inmates, we did well.

The prospect for this year is bright, it’s great because we’ve started early and we’re going to encourage every aspect of this training and programme of the service to make sure that our input yields very well.

We’re inviting the public to come and partner with us so that we can also run on the private partnership forum. We cannot do it alone, government can’t do it alone. We can say that farming has also moved to the next level of mechanization.”

The Controller General, thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for their support and leadership, noting that the NCoS is experiencing greater transformation.
