The University of Lagos Alumni Association, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, on Thursday awarded scholarship to 28 senior secondary school students across the six Area Councils of Abuja.
The scholarship covers school fees, levies, as well as registration fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Speaking to journalists, the Vice Chairperson of the association, FCT Chapter, Mrs. Julia Davis, explained that the beneficiaries were carefully selected based on academic excellence.
“These 28 students who received the award today emerged as top performers from the selection process,” she said.

She further noted that some of the beneficiaries are children with special needs, expressing pride in their resilience and achievements.
“It is encouraging to see that despite their impairments, they are able to compete effectively with their peers. We are delighted to support and celebrate them,” she added.
Mrs. Davis also emphasized that the scholarship initiative is an annual programme of the association.
“The support provided is intended to cover their WAEC and NECO examinations, as well as their school fees for the academic year. This scholarship scheme is a yearly commitment of our alumni association,” she stated.
The Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, who was represented by the Director/Secretary of the FCT Secondary Education Board, Hajiya Fatima Gambo Babba, commended the alumni association for the initiative.
She noted that many students struggle to pay their school fees, hence such interventions would significantly ease the burden on their parents.
“Some students find it difficult to pay their school fees, and this gesture will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of their parents,” she said.
She also called on other non-governmental organizations and individuals to emulate the initiative in supporting indigent students.
Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Emmanuel Emele, stressed that the programme is specifically targeted at indigent students, with a current focus on those in Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3).
He added that the scholarship scheme has been running for the past three years and would be sustained.
