The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has called for an urgent development of basic infrastructure in satellite towns to strengthen ongoing reforms in the Federal Capital terrory FCT.
Chairman of NITP, FCT chapter, Mrs. Queen Phillips made the call in Abuja at the 2025 edition of the FCT Town Planners Day.
Mrs. Phillips explained that the Abuja Master Plan envisioned satellite towns playing a complementary role in the development of the nation’s capital.
While explaining that the current reality needed to be reviewed to meet the target plan of the FCT, Mrs Philip said, “Many of the satellite towns still grapple with inadequate infrastructures, poor service delivery, and weak governance.”
The NITP Chairman, however, stressed the need for the government to fully engage experts in proffering solutions to infrastructural development in the Six area councils .
She acknowledged the recent reforms introduced by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), including new policy measures to monitor growth, enforce planning standards, and reforms in land administration to curb speculation.
The NITP Chairman charged participants to move beyond identifying problems to proffering concrete solutions.
According to her, “This year, I urge us to go beyond diagnosing challenges and focus on developing practical, actionable solutions that can transform Abuja’s satellite towns into vibrant, resilient, and inclusive urban centres.”
In his remark the Director FCT Development Control, Mr. Muktar Galadama said the administration was coming up with measures towards making Abuja a model city in accordance with the original master plan.
Galadima added that “The designation of some satellite towns, and the satellite towns as some of the component of the federal capital territory, should be allowed to develop as an entity of its own, with the governance. So this is a very important meeting today, given us the idea to rethink and rebuild the FCT Master Plan and then even the federal capital city master plan.”
Other dignitaries at the occasion pledged to support efforts at ensuring sanity in the profession devoid of quacks.
The theme of the program is “Regional Development in the FCT: Rethinking Public Sector-led Development of Abuja Satellite Towns,” attracted key stakeholders, including the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Amachi Obuah and past chairmen of the Institute.
