FCT Teachers Resume Work Today Following Wike’s Intervention

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, has officially suspended its strike action applauding the intervention of the Minister of the FCT, which was instrumental in resolving the crisis.

The suspension follows the payment of the new minimum wage and five months arrears for the primary school teachers.

The NUT State Council therefore, directed all primary school teachers in the FCT to resume work today.

This is contained in a communiqué co-signed by the FCT NUT State Chairman, Comr. Abdullahi Shafas, the Secretary, Comr. Magaret Jethro; and the Publicity Secretary, Comr. Ibukun Adekeye.

According to the communique, the Union expressed deep concern over what it described as the “insensitivity and lack of commitment” by stakeholders in FCT’s primary education sector.

It also acknowledged the FCT Minister’s efforts, including convening a crucial stakeholder meeting that involved top officials such as Chairmen of the House Committees on FCT and Area Councils, the FCT Head of Service, the Permanent Secretary of the FCT Treasury, and leaders of the NUT.

Key to the resolution was the Minister’s announcement of the release of N16 billion, representing six months’ worth of 10% of the Area Councils’ accrued Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The SWEC appreciated all primary school teachers for their unwavering support and solidarity.

It also commended the FCT Royal Fathers, Civil Society Organizations, and other well-meaning individuals who intervened towards the resolution of the strike.

The Union reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the full settlement of all outstanding entitlements and called on the government to remain proactive in addressing issues affecting public education and teachers’ welfare in the FCT.

“Let this be a turning point,” the communiqué added in prioritizing the welfare of teachers who play a foundational role in shaping the future of the nation.”

The strike, which began on March 24, 2025, was in protest of non implementation of the new minimum wage and payment of the arrears.
