Recently, the public was hit by the horrific story of killings attributed to a money-flaunting native doctor in Enugu State. Many were shocked but did not realise that their belief and words could have contributed to that incident.
The sad reality is that many people will continue to disappear in different parts of Nigeria as victims of ritual killers. The corpses of some may be found mutilated, but many may never be found because their corpses may be dumped in pits or buried. Why will people continue to be victims of ritual killers? The answer lies in the Nigerian belief system.
Nigerian Christians believe that money can be made through human sacrifice. Pastors spend hours every week preaching about it, believing they are criticising it. But they are merely promoting it. Muslims have the same belief. Imams and alfas spend hours every week condemning it, indirectly promoting it. What about many adherents of African traditional religion? They also believe it is possible.
Film producers release many films on it. The first and second Nollywood films (Living in Bondage and Circle of Doom) were based on it. The popular actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, is called Nna’nyi Sacrifice (Our Father Sacrifice) because he has acted so many such roles.
Comedians regularly use the concept for their jokes. Graduates spend precious time arguing and trying to prove that it occurs. Then the I-too-know gang will cap it all with the vacuous statement, “What you don’t know is bigger than you.”
Consequently, callous people continue to kidnap innocent children, women, and men (including guests who lodge in their hotels and deserve to be protected) and make them disappear. Only those caught are tagged as bad people.
Although it is the duty of the government to secure lives and property, it is virtually impossible for government agents to be in every nook and cranny of the country to know when someone is kidnapping a child or killing his girlfriend. Most times, government agents can only swing into action after the crime has been committed. And no matter how hard the offender is punished, it can’t bring back the dead.
Think about it. The United States has one of the most sophisticated police forces in the world. Yet, the US has the highest mass shootings in the world.
In 2023, 604 mass shootings occurred in the US, with a total of 754 people killed and 2,443 people injured. In 2021, there were 690 mass shootings; 645 in 2022; and 586 in 2024. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation defines a mass shooting as an incident in which one or more individuals are actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area using a firearm.
The US has statistics about mass shootings. Most of the mass shootings occur at workplaces (29 per cent) and schools (22 per cent). In terms of weapons used, handguns (70 per cent) are the most popular among mass shooters. While the average age of mass shooters is 34.4 years, 95 per cent of them have been male. In terms of race or ethnicity, 54 per cent have been White, 21 per cent Black, 9 per cent Hispanic, 6 per cent Asian, and people from various racial backgrounds constitute the remaining 10 per cent.
Yet, the US, despite the sophistication of its police, CIA, FBI, and even the military, has not been able to solve this mass shooting epidemic. If this were happening in a third-world country, many would have thought that such would be impossible in a developed country. Note that Canada is a neighbour to the US and has the same British ancestry. However, Canada does not have the type of mass shooting challenge that the US has.
