The Southeast Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for the cancellation of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after technical glitches affected nearly 380,000 candidates, particularly from the South East and Lagos.
In a statement in Abuja The caucus leader, Igariwey Enwo, said JAMB’s response was grossly inadequate, citing poor communication and scheduling conflicts with ongoing WAEC examinations.
The lawmakers demanded the resignation of the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, and the suspension of key officials.
The caucus emphasized that JAMB’s failure has caused unnecessary trauma for students and families.
While acknowledging Oloyede’s public admission of the failure, the lawmakers said accountability must go beyond apologies, noted that his resignation would allow for a thorough, independent review of the failure and restore public confidence in the examination body.
The caucus reminded JAMB of its constitutional duty to guarantee equal and adequate educational opportunities for all Nigerian children, a responsibility they said had been violated in this instance.
