ECOWAS unveils media excellence award

todayApril 10, 2025

Background

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting journalistic excellence by recognising the vital role media professionals play in advancing the bloc’s mission and fostering regional unity.

Speaking at the official launch of the ECOWAS Media Excellence Awards 2025 in Abuja, the Senior Adviser to the ECOWAS President, Mambury Njie, stressed the importance of acknowledging those who communicate developments from the ground and uphold the truth through their work.

It is our shared responsibility to recognise those who communicate what is happening on the ground—those who reveal the truth,” Njie said. “Over the years, the visibility and understanding of ECOWAS’ mission have been significantly enhanced through journalistic reporting.”

He assured attendees of a transparent and credible selection process, underpinned by ECOWAS’ strong governance framework. Njie further noted that the awards are more than ceremonial—they are intended to serve as a long-term legacy that will encourage reporting focused on democracy, peace, and development in West Africa.

This initiative isn’t just about accolades. It’s about building a legacy for the next fifty years of regional growth and integration,” he added.

Principal Officer of Information and Communication Joel Ahofodji described the awards as a landmark event, the first of its kind by ECOWAS, designed to honour outstanding journalism that embodies the principles of human rights, democracy, peace, and regional cohesion.

A seven-member jury of respected media professionals from across West Africa will evaluate entries based on quality, impact, and originality. The jury includes Adrienne Diop (Senegal), Yemi Kolapo (Nigeria), Paul Douakoutche (Benin), Filomena Silva (Cabo Verde), Bamba Mafoumgbe (Côte d’Ivoire), Abdoulie Gassama (Gambia), and Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal (Ghana).

Jurors praised the initiative, calling attention to the often-underappreciated work of journalists in the region.

With the theme “50 Years of ECOWAS—Honoring the Voices That Tell Our Story,” the awards are set to become an annual tradition that not only celebrates journalistic excellence but also reinforces the crucial role of the media in shaping the future of West Africa.
