The Deputy Speaker of the House of representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable social development and justice.
This is contained in a statement in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu
According to the statement, the deputy speaker stated this at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, highlighting key legislative achievements which includes the establishment of regional development commissions, the Student Loan Act 2024, and the creation of national commissions for various sectors.
He commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government for implementing tax reforms and notes that the parliament has initiated a robust oversight function to ensure compliance, transparency, and accountability.
Kalu, however, expresses concern about Africa’s significant debt profile, which strains public finances and limits resources for social investments.
He Urges members of IPU to reaffirm their shared commitment to a new social contract that places people at the centre of every decision and prioritises robust oversight and accountability.
