The importance of early detection, periodic screening, and timely treatment has been emphasised in the fight against glaucoma related blindness.
Head of Department, Opthalmology, Federal Medical Centre Lokoja, Kogi state, Doctor Eneojo Ocheni stated this in an interview with our correspondent on the World Glaucoma week,a global campaign to raise awareness about the disease.
Doctor Ocheni, who described glaucoma as the leading cause of blindness said awareness was key in making the populace to be more informed of the condition.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s glaucoma week, “Uniting for a glaucoma free world,” Doctor Ocheni called on stakeholders to work together through collaboration to ensure a glaucoma free society.
The Opthalmologist who stressed the need for early detection also urged Nigerians to be aware of the risk factors of the disease and always present themselves for periodic screening, especially for those who have a family history of glaucoma.
March ninth to fifteenth is set aside annually to mark world glaucoma week.
