The House of Representatives has approved a 2025 budget of N250 billion for the South East Development Commission, SEDC, a move aimed at addressing the region’s longstanding development challenges.
The budget approval is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling the federal government’s promise to rebuild and develop the South East region, which was devastated by the civil war over 54 years ago.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, after the budget defence by the management of SEDC, Chairman of the committee, Chris Nkwonta, noted that the budget will focus on addressing infrastructural deficits, erosion, and human capital development in the region.
“The SEDC is expected to play a crucial role in promoting economic development, reducing poverty, and improving living standards in the South East region”.
While commending President Bola Tinubu for signing into law the SEDC bill, Nwokota said that the projects through the commission will end agitation and youth restiveness in the area.
