House Commends Tinubu For Increasing Sports Sector Budget

todayJanuary 15, 2025

Background

The House Committee on Sports has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for significantly increasing the budget for the sports sector in 2025, raising it from ₦29 billion in 2024 to over ₦94 billion.

During a budget defence session for the National Sports Commission, NSC, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the National Institute for Sports, NIS, at the National Assembly in Abuja, Chairman of the Committee, Kabiru Amadu described the budgetary increase as a pivotal moment for sports in Nigeria.

Amadu noted that the budget represents a 227% increase, highlighting the importance of this financial commitment to addressing critical issues within the sports sector, such as deteriorating infrastructure, insufficient funding for over 40 sports federations, and a lack of sustainable development plans.

He expressed optimism that the increased allocation would lead to better management and development of sports activities across the country.

The lawmaker assured the NSC, NFF, and NIS of the committee’s support to ensure timely fund releases and effective utilization of the budget.

He pledged that the committee would diligently oversee the allocation to ensure it is used efficiently once the budget is enacted.

In his presentation, NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko outlined key initiatives, including upgrades to the Abuja National Stadium and other facilities nationwide.

Dikko also announced plans to commercialize and rebrand 200 hostels within the NFF building, which he believes will contribute to economic growth.

Additionally, the commission aims to construct 100 mini-stadiums across the country to enhance community-level sports development, stating, “The commission is committed to revitalizing Nigeria’s sports sector in line with global best practices.”
