In fulfillment of his promise, Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike has distributed 100 motorcycles to security agencies to adequately beef up security in difficult terrains in the rural communities.
Distributing the motorcycles in Abuja, the Minister urged the benefiting security agencies to put the Motorcycles to good use, with a stern warning, that they should not use them to operate in the city centre of Abuja.
Mr Wike announced that the six Area Council Chairmen are to take 10 motorcycles each, 30 for the Nigeria Police, 5 for Department Of State Services, DSS and the remaining 5 for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, even as he urged them to keep them safe.
“But let me caution, particularly to the security agencies, please utilise these motorcycles to fight crimes in the areas you have identified. I am here to handover the motorcycles to Area Councils and the Security Agencies”.
“Remember that security agencies requested for a specialised motorcycle, that will be used particularly in the rural areas. The vigilantes will use them in the six area councils, and then the Police, the DSS, and the Civil Defence”.
“Sometimes when you give out vehicles, before you know it, the vehicles are no more there. I don’t want to hear stories tomorrow that the motorcycles are nowhere to be found again, I don’t want to hear such stories” Wike warned.
Wike who explained that security of lives and property is a priority of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, said the FCTA will equally provide logistics (fuel and maintenance) to the benefiting security agencies.
“We have promised the residents of Abuja and the Area Councils that security is a priority for the Renewed Hope Agenda. Anything we can do to protect lives and properties; we are going to do it. Make sure that these motorcycles are given out to the vigilantes, and we are going to provide logistics for those who are going to use these motorcycles” Wike said.
Apart from this effort, the FCT Minister also promised to make provision for additional security vehicles within the next two weeks to ensure that security agencies have what it takes to provide water- tight- security for residents of the territory.
Responding on behalf of the Area Council Chairmen, the AMAC Chairman, Mr Christopher Zakka Mailakangu thanked the FCT Minister for the gesture and promised to ensure that the motorcycles are utilized for the purpose for which they were procured.
Lending his voice, the Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh thanked the Minister for donating operational motorcycles to enhance community security across the six Area Councils, adding that it will help the personnel to have access to hard to reach areas.
The event was attended by Heads of various Security Agencies, including men of the Vigilante Group Of Nigeria.
