Nigeria Association Of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has reached out to women in Garki community in line with her vision to care for women and children.

The outreach was part of numerous activities lined up to mark the International Women’s day in Abuja.

On the occasion, the women in Garki Community were encouraged to take their hygiene seriously to promote their health.

The women were also taught the need to rest well, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and cultivate the habit of drinking plenty water on a daily basis rather than eating junks and drinking carbonated drinks.

Addressing the women, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang said the decision to empower grassroots women was borne out of the zeal to inspire inclusion for sustainable development.

According to her, when women are empowered, they can break the cycle of poverty, advocate for their rights, and become agents of change within their communities.

“Empowering grassroots women does not just mean providing resources or opportunities; but about recognising what they do or where they work and ensure that they have the tools, knowledge, and support to shape their own destinies. For this to happen, we must bridge the gap so as to empower grassroots women effectively, hence it is crucial to address the various gaps that hinder their progress”.

Comrade Ita- Ikpang therefore called on
Government at all levels to ensure improved access to healthcare services for grassroots women and their families, even as she urged the Civil Society Organisations to advocate legal reforms and provide legal aid services to assist grassroots women secure their rights to land, property, and justice.

“By bridging gaps and building futures, we can create a world where all women, regardless of their background or circumstances, have the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and lead”.

The special guest of honour, Senator Ita Enang, encouraged the rural women to give equal opportunities to their children to develop their potential irrespective of gender.

Senator Enang specifically urged them to prioritize the girl child education and disregard the misconception that women education ends in the kitchen, pointing out that with the right knowledge, they will be well equipped to handle life complexities.

Also, wife of the Sa’Peyi of Garki, Ambassador, Hannatu Usman Nga- kupi thanked NAWOJ for choosing Garki community for the outreach, noting that the gesture and the lessons learnt will help in shaping their thoughts.

In a good will message, an Assistant Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mrs Katherine Adunola Abimbola who spoke on mental health, urged the women to manage their resources and cut down excesses to be able to overcome the current economic realities, evident in the increasing cost of items.

Highpoint of the event was the distribution of palliatives to the rural women.
